Students arrived at HBO on Thursday May 6th, brimming with excitement and eager to hear from HBO professionals about careers in technology. During this event, MOUSE students were exposed to a multitude of opportunities in the field of Information Technology. They also learned about the skills they should brush up on if they are interested in any of these jobs and received practical advice about how and why they might want to pursue a career in technology.
MOUSE students and educators from the following schools participated:
- International High School
- East-West School of International Studies
- Bard High school Early College
- John Dewey High School
- Robert F. Wagner Junior SSAT
- W.C. Bryant High School
- High School for Arts & Technology
- Baccalaureate School for Global Education

During this event, students heard from a variety of different HBO professionals. An executive in the Information Technology Department at HBO welcomed MOUSE students by sharing some information about his experiences working in technology. Students also got a behind-the-scenes look at some of the features unveiled as part of the new HBO.com site. During a presentation on Real World Corporate IT Jobs students learned about the the main job categories in IT and were introduced to careers they didn’t even know existed!
Our host for the event facilitated an engaging panel discussion with the speakers. Students were surprised to learn about the wealth of benefits that an IT career can offer,
ranging from inter-industry mobility to the ability to work as part of a much larger team. During the Q&A, students asked insightful and intelligent questions that ran the gamut from how true is the stereotype that IT professionals spend all day behind a computer screen in isolation to how is the economic crisis affecting the job market in this sector. Even the speakers were surprised by the advanced tech know-how of the MOUSE students.
The event began and ended with a taste of HBO programming in the form of an introductory Sizzle made up of previews and a screening of a riveting and touching HBO original documentary about the non-profit organization Locks of Love.
Students and coordinators enjoyed getting a taste of HBO and an inside-look into the field of IT careers. They came away from the event with comments including:
- “I think it was great to see the behind the scenes inner workings of a large organization like HBO. There are so many levels to IT that aren’t publicized.”
- “I would like to give a big thanks to all who gave their own time for us. I honestly got a clearer image of what I should do in the future.”
MOUSE would like to thank everyone at HBO who hosted our students and helped to make this event a huge success!
