Syed Zaidi

“MOUSE builds leaders,” Syed Zaidi says reflecting on his experiences participating in the MOUSE Squad program throughout middle and high school. Syed exemplifies this very theme. As a junior at Hobart and William Smith College, he was most recently recognized as “Leader of the Month, one who embodies the leadership skills and spirit that students at his college strive to achieve.”
Syed joined the MOUSE Squad program in 2002, while he was in seventh grade at Baccalaureate School for Global Education (BSGE) in Queens. He had been interested in technology since he was young and quickly became involved in fixing computers, web design and helping teachers with desktop applications. At the end of seventh grade, City Council Member Eric Gioia presented an award to the MOUSE Squad at BSCE because of its outstanding technical support. “It was then that I realized I was part of something big,” stated Syed.
Syed continued to be recognized for his contributions as part of the MOUSE Squad when he entered high school. “Everyone at school looked at me as the ‘MOUSE guy,' as a leader in the school,” he remarked. During high school, Syed provided over 1000 hours of community service through his involvement in the MOUSE Squad.
During the summer after ninth grade, Syed had one of his most memorable experiences with MOUSE. Syed was one of ten students to travel to Jordan to share his knowledge of providing technical support in schools. As part of the Linking Individuals, Knowledge & Culture (LINC) Program, these students taught 28 Jordanian students from six schools about hardware, software and computer troubleshooting. While in Jordan, Syed also had the opportunity to visit the United States Embassy in Amman and speak directly with the Ambassador.
In tenth grade, Syed was invited to join a new program called MOUSE Corps, which would provide career readiness workshops and professional opportunities for high school students. “When I heard about MOUSE Corps, I jumped on it,” Syed stated. “I’ve always wanted to work in industry so I saw this as something very exciting to do while in high school.”
Syed’s first professional opportunity was at American Express in December 2005. Syed shadowed the IT help desk team at American Express, experiencing everything from help desk calls and ticket tracking to accompanying technical analysts on client calls. “It was great walking around the 50th floor in a suit and tie – meeting people that were responsible for tech support and the executives – where the magic was happening. I think this was one of the best experiences I’ve had.”
A few months later, Syed shadowed professionals in the Presentations department at UBS. He was involved with creating and editing business strategy presentations and had the opportunity to watch when these presentations were given. “One the first day, I fixed a technical issue they were having and one of the people looked at me and said ‘we have the right person here!’”
While back in school, his level of technical support continued to increase. Syed became involved in helping teachers use SMART Boards, create personal web pages and track student grades online.
Syed also used his experience from his Shadowships to develop a database to log hours for students providing technical support in their schools. He was then invited to present his “Hours Tracking” database at the annual National Educational Computing Conference (NECC) in Atlanta during the summer of 2007. “It was fantastic,” Syed recalled. “It was a quick moving day, but well worth it.” Apart from the conference, Syed was also invited to take a behind the scenes tour at CNN.
During the summer after eleventh grade, Syed participated in a paid internship for six weeks at TekServe, during which he became “Apple Certified.” “I realized that I was getting such valuable opportunities through MOUSE -- the fact that I would have a resume done, the fact that I even knew what a resume was and the ability to be certified in technical support.”
Reflecting on his experiences with MOUSE, Syed stated. “MOUSE is one of few organizations that empowers students by giving them opportunities to be in the professional environment. These opportunities have taught me many of the techniques that I use today. MOUSE taught me perspective, a way of working with people and how to think, speak and write in a professional way.”
Now attending Hobart and William Smith College (HWS), Syed is double majoring in International Relations and Public Policy. He is founder of Project Nur, a club that provides a foundation for the Muslim community at HWS. Syed is vice president of Hillel, an active member of the International Student Association and serves on five Hobart Student Government committees.
