MOUSE Squad Alum, School of the Future

Known as a model for the new small schools initiative in NYC, the School of the Future is a secondary school that serves children from 6th to 12th grade. This school is a community of enthusiastic learners with a staff of dedicated, intelligence and caring professionals.
Ryan Mason, a recent School of the Future graduate has been involved in the MOUSE Sqaud program since 2003. When one of his 6th grade teachers noticed that he enjoyed fixing computers, she recommended that he join the MOUSE Squad program at his school. During the first few years, Ryan handled many common technical issues, including fixing computers, adding memory and creating networks.
When Ryan was in 10th grade, he was invited to join the MOUSE Corps program, which provides an advanced leadership program for New York City high school students including professional opportunities, conference participation and in-depth technology projects. As part of the MOUSE Corps program, Ryan participated in Summer Internship at Citi and Tekserve and presented at NECC, the National Education Computing Conference.
One of Ryan’s most exciting projects was the creation of an online tutorial for use of the One Laptop Per Child computer, developed by Nicholas Negroponte. In October 2007, Ryan had the honor of presenting his tutorial to Mr. Negronpote at the MOUSE 10th Anniversary Gala.

Ryan graduated from the School of the Future in June 2009, then was recognized as the 1st MOUSE Corps Fellow, receiving a technology internship at MOUSE and a brand new laptop for college. Ryan is currently attending Susquehanna University.
During Summer 2010, Ryan particpated in a paid internship at Time Warner, where he had the opportunity to work with the A/V side of their organization. At the conclusion of his internship, Ryan wrote:
I want to thank you for the opportunity to intern at Time Warner over the summer. Learning about how to deal with video and audio devices is a skill I am looking forward to bringing back to my school’s IT team...Experiences like these are what will really shape what I do after my four years in school.
Through Ryan's involvement with MOUSE, we have also developed a relationship with Ryan's mother, Aralyn Mason. Aralyn shared her thoughts about the impact of this program on her son:
MOUSE prepares students, like my son, to thrive in an increasingly competitive economy. My son's participation in MOUSE has profoundly impacted his life. I have watched him develop into a responsible young man who can articulate his vision of what he aspires to do in the future.
The internships and the shadowships that he has had the opportunity to be a part of have helped in the advancement of his technological skill. Yet more importantly, he has learned to problem solve, to communicate, to be a team player and a team leader.
I believe deeply in MOUSE's mission, their program and the staff's commitment to their students. I am thankful that MOUSE was available to my son at a young age to help shape his future. I wholeheartedly believe MOUSE provides a much needed solution for the many challenges facing New York City schools.
